ALLER PETFOOD FACES THE FUTURE WITH RENEWED VIGOUR

Like any family business, the Byllings had been keeping a close eye on where they saw the companies going in the future. “Recent changes in the Danish agricultural market had resulted in a dramatic shift in farmers’ requirements to the feedmill,” Henriette explains. “So we made the decision to sell the feed milling activities to Dan Aller Holding a part of the DLA Group. This has freed us up to focus exclusively on Aller Petfood.... The potential in the pet food market demonstrates that this is where our energies should lie – and although we may be sad about letting go of the feedmill side, we’re facing the future with renewed vigour and confidence!

The History of Aller Mølle

The story of Aller Petfood begins at Aller Mølle, an ancient mill located in Aller, Denmark, with a history that dates back to Viking days.

Before 1769, Aller Mølle was owned by the Danish king who leased it out to various millers. This was followed by a succession of owners until 1864 when, as a result of the German-Danish war, the border was re-located north of Aller Sogn, an area denoted by the parish of Aller. Now in German territory, Aller Mølle was cut off from many of its former customers.

The current miller, Ferdinand Tams, sold Aller Mølle to a company owned by Danes – a move that wasn’t popular with the German authorities. The mill underwent modernisation and in 1910 was sold to new owners.

The first Bylling at Aller Mølle Frederik Bylling, the new miller and also a Dane, worked at the mill during the day. However his Danish citizenship meant that he and his wife were forced to retreat behind the Danish side of the border at night – a less than ideal arrangement!

Their son, Hans Jørgen Bylling, was born a Danish citizen. However in 1914, as a result of WW1, the border was closed and the miller and his family were forced to reside in Aller on the German side of the border.

Subsequent generations at Aller Mølle

In 1911 the mill underwent refurbishment following a fire. Then in 1921 Frederik Bylling was successful in purchasing Aller Mølle for himself.

On completing school Frederik’s son, Hans Jørgen Bylling, initially pursued military training. He took over Aller Mølle in 1938, the second generation of the family in charge of the mill. A forward-thinking individual, Hans developed the mill in accordance with the changing requirements of his customers and was a pioneer in the production of pelletised pig feed when it was introduced in the 1950’s.

Hans and his wife Misse lived and worked at the mill. They had four children there: Povl born 1946 followed by Birgitte (born 1948), Kirsten (born 1951) and finally Hans Erik (born 1953). Over time, both Povl and Hans became involved in the family business – the third generation of Byllings at the mill.

Divisions ensure focus

The Byllings had always been innovators and in 1968 the business expanded to serve the fish farming sector. The family diversified into pet food production in 1979.

In 2007 as a result of unprecedented growth, the Aller Mølle Group split into three divisions: Agriculture, Fish Farming and Pet Food. The Fish Farming division is run by Hans Erik Bylling under the name of the Aller Aqua Group while Aller Petfood and Aller Mølle are run as the Aller Mølle Group.

The Aller Mølle Group is now proud to have welcomed the fourth generation of Byllings into the company. Povl Bylling and his son Frederik Bylling manage Aller Mølle while his daughter Henriette Bylling manages Aller Petfood.
